Aethered - as ready as he'll ever be

In 978 he took the crown
His brother having been struck down
(Edward, something of a tartar,
Now once dead became a Martyr).
It was a somewhat troubled reign:
The Vikings were a royal pain.
Longboats cleaved the seas asunder,
Britain’s coasts were ripe for plunder.
Stealthily those Norse marauders
Forged their way to England’s borders.
Aethelred gave out his orders:
And bade his men to have them slain.
It was a massive, mighty blunder.
Infuriating good king Sweyne
Whose sister was among the dead.
The Danish king was so enraged
Another great attack was staged
And once he’d beaten Aethelred
Was king of England in his stead.
