King Aethelred stages a comeback

It is rare for a monarch to get to come back for a second term. Usually our kings and queens serve their time - anything from a few short months to 50 years plus - then either die of natural causes or are snuffed out by the opposition. But King Aethelred lived to reign another day. Not so much on account of his superb kingly qualities, more because his usurper - King Sweyne -  upped and died himself.

So Aethelred returned to the throne, his position even stronger because his valorous son, Edmund Ironside, was now ready to fight alongside him to help keep the troublesome Danes at bay. However, Aethelred and Edmund hadn't factored in the fact that King Sweyne also had a son - a strong, brave and able lad who eventually became a match for both of them.
