Not surprisingly, we know relatively little about those less-great royals from eons ago. And when writing an epic poem about long-forgotten people with names like Beorhtwulf and Ludeca, rhyming becomes a little tricky. So here’s the part that sketches over the period from 796 to 871, which is when King Alfred the Great came to the throne.
But luckily, from out the blue
A distant cousin soon emerged
Coenwulf was among the few
Who ruthless Offa hadn’t purged.
There followed then a goodly string
Of strange-named men who would be king.
Among this merry royal band
Were Ceolwulf I and Beornwulf too
Ludeca, and Wiglaf next
Egbert, Wigmund joined the queue
Wigstan, Beorhtwulf, Burgred Rex
All were rulers of this land.
