Surrendering to the Danes brings peace

In 1016 when Aethel died
Young Edmund took his place with pride
But sadly died that self same year
So King Canute came over here.
Although he was a foreign chap,
The Great Dane reigned without mishap.
The Viking threat had been expelled
The churches’ coffers filled with geld,
The fighting was allowed to cease
And England had at last found peace.
